Abstract
The collection contains research done by Roy Marcot for the writing of his book Civil War Chief of Sharpshooters; Hiram Berdan Military Commander and Firearms Inventor. It includes copies of sharpshooter correspondence, court records, patent records, and photos of sharpshooters and firearms, as well as drawings of Berdan's firearms and other inventions.

Biographical or Historical Information
Hiram Berdan (1824-1893) was born in Phelps, New York. He was the top rifle shot in the country for fifteen years before the Civil War. He worked as an engineer, and developed many inventions which aided in firearms, science, industry, and everyday life. Notably, during the Civil War he was the commanding officer of the famed United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiments. The profits from his inventions allowed him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
