Scope and Contents

Hand-tinted stereograph, T. W. Ingersoll [?], c. 1899, 8.9 x 17.8 cm.

Native American Indian woman wearing pink bodice, blue plaid skirt, and green/burgundy plaid shawl sitting on ground and holding baby in cradleboard.  Baby wrapped in red/yellow/white patterned blanket.

On front: “404.  Chippewa Squaw and Papoose.”  On back: “It is seldom indeed that an Indian woman can boast as much pretention to beauty as is shown by the squaw in this picture.  As a rule, the Indian woman becomes fat, dumpy and exceedingly unprepossessing in appearance by the time she has reached her twenty-third or twenty-fourth year.  It must be understood that the coloring of the squaw in this picture does not do justice to the original as she should be considerably darker than is shown here.  The babe looks like a white babe in this photograph, while as a matter of fact it is of a copper hue.  The characteristic shape of the carrying board made by the Chippewa Indians is plainly revealed here.  The child is evidently along enough in months to dispense with the side boards which are sometimes used, and the netting over the bow has been dispensed with in order that a good picture may be had.  The Chippewas are among the few Indian tribes which do not, as a people, object to being photographed, it being characteristic of the Indian to believe that ‘he will lose his shadow’ if he allows himself to be photographed.  A8835”
