Plaques: 1)This Tablet Commemorates John Ross (Lieut.J.S.King's Apprentice). A lad of 15 years of age, who in 1827, braving the perils of an unexplored land inhabited by an unknown people, and abounding in wild animals, walked with great courage from Port Natal to Delagoa Bay and back (a distance of 600 miles) in order to obtain sorely needed medicines and other necessaries for the handful of pioneers at the Bay of Natal.
2)THE OLD FORT. Within this area was situated the Camp in which a small British Force, under Captain T.Charlton Smith the 27th Regiment (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) was Beleaguered by the Emigrant Boers under Commandant Andries Pretorius in 1842 to secure relief for the Garrison, Dick King Rode 600 miles to Grahamstown. From 1842 to 1897 it was occupied by various Regiments and Detachments of the British Army.
