Slides: P.91.31.001 - P.91.31.048 The Voortrekker Monument is located just south of Pretoria in South Africa. The granite structure is located on a hilltop, and was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape colony between 1835 and 1854. PRETORIA, South Africa. DURBAN: An AUTO RICKSHAW (tuk-tuk) in Nairobi. Rickshaws were introduced to Durban, and by 1904 there were about 2,000 rgistered rickshaw pullers. This man in the slide, is dressed in native costume - huge headdress with horns attached. In the background is the "MERMAID LIDO" (which no longer exists), but at the time had a series of little shops - a barber, a photo shop, an American-style 'milk bar' called the Cherry Tree, a beach clothing shop and various other things. Steps down led to a large cafe' at beach level, which you could also enter directly from the beach, and steps led up to another storey, one above promenade level, where older people went for their entertainment. A Shipyard: one marked "Durban" and one "LM" (same shipyard). KIMBERLY: Capital City of South Africa's Northern Cape Province. Hand Dug Big Hole - filled with water.
