The Cody Enterprise, May 10, 1972. "PAUL STOCK DIES TUESDAY, A DEEP LOSS FELT IN CODY" The end of an era in the oil business, especially in Wyoming, was marked this week with the death of Paul Stock, prominent Cody oilman, civic leader, and philanthropist. Born Sept.11, 1894, in Florence, CO, the sixth of seven children of Hugh Edward and Kate Young Stock. There was never a doubt as to what would be his life's work since the family had already been in the oil business for three generations. His father pioneered oil production in Colorado when he brought in that state's first producer near Florence. His great grandfather helped Colonel Drake drill the third oil well in the United States in Pennsylvania in the mid 1800's. After grade school Paul started work for his father at the age of 15 as a roughneck. He rapidly progressed to tool dresser and driller before setting out for himself in Casper in 1914. During these years he worked as far afield as Havana, Cuba and Mexico as well as helping his father bring in the famed Salt Creek field near Casper. During WWI he served as a sergeant in Company C of the 13th Ammunition Train. Mr.Stock moved to Cody in 1923 and was active in the development of Oregon Basin and the Byron-Garland fields. Etc.
