The Southern conference dashed all hopes of future competition by University women in varsity sports when it amended its constitution to prohibit any female from taking part in conference athletic activities. It all began with Bette Hushla, the first female member of the WVU swimming team. Four University women athletes, who recently were barred from all future competition in the SC, Bette Hushle, Patricia (Trish) Kinsella, Donna Leggett and Valerie Lewis. Students were signing a protest telegram at an amazing rate. By 7 p.m. some 4,000 signatures had been obtained.
