Scope and Contents
Franklin Orth accompanied the U.S. Team to Wiesbaden Germany for the 39th World Shooting Championships. Upon his return, he wrote to General Johnson; It gives me special pleasure to report to you the outstanding success of this team. Fifty-two nations participated, represented by more than a thousand competing marksmen. The United States Team was by far the most outstanding. From a total of 37 events our shooters brought home 17 gold medals. Our strongest competitors from the Soviet Uniion, won 10 gold medals and the remaining 10 were shared among 7 other nat'l teams. During this exceptional performance, our U.S. shooters established 9 new World Records: Capt.John Foster established a new record in the kneeling position, free rifle, 300-meters, Score 391. Other record setters: WO David Boyd, USMC; Lt. Gary Anderson, NGUS; Airman 1st Cl Kenneth Jones, USAF. In the team events our shooters established five new World Records. Etc
