*THE MARKSMAN. Headline:"Indoor Rifle Crown To Army". An Int'l Smallbore Rifle Team fielded by the USAMTU was acclaimed Nat'l Indoor Rifle Champions May 16. The Championship four-man team composed of Olympic medal winners Maj.Lones W.Wigger, Capt.Lanny Bassham, Maj.John Foster and Capt.Carl Jooss, fired their championship score of 1588 of a possible 1600 in the Melbourne, FL regional matches in Feb. Wigger's score was 798, Foster's 797,and Jooss was 3rd with 796. An additional National Championship was recognized...when the outstanding score by Tricia Foster, who posted a 796...for fourth overall, and was announced as the National Women's Indoor Champion. Tricia is also the present Int'l. Prone Women's Rifle champion and a former Nat'l Women's Smallbore Postion Champion. Stock photo P.419.2588 used on the cover. Scores posted by the championship team in winning their new title showed Foster w/a perfect 400, Wigger 398, Bassham 397, and Jooss w/393. During individual competition, Bassham won prone w/ 200-20X, Wigger took sitting w/ 200-19X and Foster won the kneeling, 200-19X and standing 198-13X. Each of the 3 first place marksmen, Wigger, Foster and Bassham, beat the old mark of 566 established by Foster and Russian marksman Boris Melnik. World Record Exceeded-Led by Wigger...., 4 Army high power rifle marksmen blazed their way to new record heights and exceeded world record for Army Rifle on the final day in the 13th Annual Int'l.Interservice Shooting Championships May 6. Wigger won the championship w/574 over Foster's 571. The present world record of 566 held jointly by Foster and Melnik, was also exceeded by 3rd place shooter Bassham who posted 568. The 4 men then representing the AMU, posted a team championship score of 2279 which topped (by 52 points) the present world mark held by a Russian team. *THE COLUMBUS ENQUIRER, COLUMBUS,GA.
