Scope and Contents

*AMU Hosts Worlds' Shooters. A big part of the world served as the "stage-of-action" for the almost daily performances of the USAMTU during the 1974 shooting season. During the year, shooter-instructors from "Home Of Champs" lectured, demonstrated and taught shooters of 20 foreign countries, police units, University ROTC teams, civilian gun clubs, Reserve and Natl. Guard teams and other Army shooters. Etc. * Records Keep on Breakin'. 2 new national records were placed in the books by USAM Nov.3 at the Int'l Triple Crown Indoor Rifle Championship hosted by Texas Christian University. Led by the dual performance of Maj.John Foster and Capt.Lanny Bassham, each winning an individual rifle event, the Army quartet posted a new nat'l record score of 2318 in Standard Rifle and claimed the remaining 2 team championship events. The second nat'l record was hung up by Foster when he grabbed the championship of the Standard Rifle match with his 584 to lead the Army in a clean sweep of top spots in the event. Runner up honors went to Bassham at 583. Boyd Goldsby was third. The four man Army team, fielded by the USAMTU, included Foster, Bassham, Goldsby and 1st. Lt.Ernest Vande Zande. In addition to the Standard Rifle records and laurels, the Army marksmen also forged into the top places in the Free Rifle which Bassham won w/1171 and Foster was runner up w/1169. Army shooters prevailed in two of three events in the Triple Crown tourney, and the Grand Aggregate Championship. The big prize went to Bassham w/a three gun aggregate of 2134 while Foster was runner-up w/ 2133. *Shooters Honored. Diana) 12 Army marksmen honored Dec.11 when Brig.Gen.Volney Warner, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, FORSCOM recognized the group for their outstanding shooting achievements during the recently concluded 41st World Shooting Championships at Thun, Switzerland. The 12 medalists, all members of the USAMU, were part of the 48 member U.S.Shooting Team. The chief contributors in this superb performance was Capt.Lanny Bassham, Maj.Lones Wigger, and Maj.John R.Foster. The three talented Army shooters garnered 37 medals among them, almost half the U.S.count. Etc....In addition to being the top medal winner for the U.S.cause at Thun, Bassham was the only shooter in the world matches to win three gold medals in one match. He did this feat in the 300 meter Free Rifle when he won the prone and standing phases of the three position match and then topped the large contingent of aspiring shooters to gain the gold medal for the highest aggregate score. Foster won the gold medal in the kneeling phase to give the United States a clean sweep of the gold awards in the 300 meter match.
