Scope and Contents
Headline: Gun gal gains Olympic role, champs miss. Margaret Murdock became the 1st woman to win a berth on the U.S.Olympic Shooting Team w/a 2nd place tie-breaking finish in 3-Position Smallbore Rifle match in team tryouts. First place in the match was Lanny Bassham, who racked up a 3,475 out of 3,600 score to capture the match by a sizable edge over Murdock and Jack Writer. Writer, the 1972 Olympic champion at Munich in 3-position smallbore, finished w/3,453-exactly where Murdock was in a photo finish for runner-up. Based on last day scores, the edge went to Murdock who had 1,151, Writer 1,149. The outcome meant that two of the world's great position rifle shooters, Writer and Lones Wigger, won't be in Montreal Olympics. No mention of John Foster in the article.
