Nearly 500 of the nations top rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters have been arriving in Phoenix for opening of proctice...at Black Canyon and Phoenix Trap and Skeet Club ranges on Mon. Jul.13. After 2 days of practice for all except free rifle 300M shooters, competition gets under way Wed. At stake will be the U.S.Championships and places on the 53-member U.S. team that will compete here in Oct. in the 40th World Shooting Championships. The championships will consist of 16 fired matches. Fourteen women shooters, topped by Capt.Margaret Murdock in rifle competition...etc. Capt.Murdock is the only woman competing in the grueling 300M free rifle event. The free rifle match-40 shots each, prone, kneeling and standing at 300M-will be wide open for a new champion as Gary Anderson, current world champion, is not competing. Maj.Lones Wigger, who won the U.S. championship here last fall, will be the strongest contender. Capt. John Foster, whose family resides in Phoenix, Lt. John Writer, Navy shooter Dan Morine and William Krilling will afford plenty of competition.
