(Paragraph 5) Meantime, Maj.Lones Wigger,equalled the world record and set a new U.S.record in the first day of the Air Rifle match, w/385X400. Marine CWO David Boyd placed 2nd w/381 and Maj.John Foster, 3rd w/379. Lanny Bassham 5th w/370. The previou U.S.record of 383 for the single course of 40 shots was set in 1968. Rifle shooters were delayed getting underway w/the Standard Rifle event due to electrical short in the sophisticated target system, and missed the early-morning cool, windless weather. However, Boyd fired a 567 to take lead in Men's division and Capt.Margaret Murdock fired a 565 to lead the women's division.Boyd was followed by Maj.Bruce Meredith w/565 and Maj. Foster w/561. 5th, Lt.Lanny Bassham w/558. Next in Women's division, Bonny Hampson w/551 and Tricia Foster w/549.
