Headline: 64 National Smallbore Rifle Marks Recorded. Olympic Gold Medalist Maj.Lones Wigger, USAMTU, led the band of competitors in rewriting the record books Feb.4 and then went on to win the Grand Aggregate Championship of the Champion of Champions Smallbore Rifle Indoor Meet at Fort Benning w/a 4,711 total. In the 4 day meet...the large band of mixed Army, Army Reserve and Civilian competitors, hung up 64 new National records. A record in itself. Behind Wigger in the Grand Aggregate...etc. In runner up spot, Capt.Lanny Bassham w/4,695 (of 4800), Bruce Meredith in 3rd place w/4,694. Next 3 were noteworthy in that Maj.John Foster...of the AMU, fired 4,685 while former World Champion Capt.Margaret Murdock was in 5th place w/4,665. The 6th place to Trish Foster w/4,663. Fosters are one of 2 husband and wife smallbore rifle teams who compete in natl. and int'l. marksmanship arena. Both hold many records and Trish is the present Int'l.Prone Women's Champion and a former Natl. Women's Smallbore Rifle Position Champion. She has fired on both Gold and Silver teams in 2 World Championships along w/Maj.Foster. Of the 64 new records established, all but one were rung up by the six first place shooters w/ Trish Foster grabbing the most with 7 and Merdith w/6. Bassham set 4 new highs for the record books while Wigger contributed 3. Probably most noteworthy shooting during the tournament, was standing position record 392 (of 400) in scope match set by Maj. Meredith. In the 40-shot event, he allowed only 8 shots to stray from the bullseye. In the onslaught of new records, the marksmen accomplished 14 open, 16 Service, 14 Reserve, 7 Civilian and 12 Women's records for one of the most successful Gallery matches held at the west GA Infantry post. Along w/successes in individual competition, Wigger led the Army team into the championship circle in 18 of the 24 matches. The Army Reserves took 6 while no civilian team registered a victory. Wigger established an early pattern in shooting in the first relay at the lead of competition and earned 1st sub-aggregate champion w/combined iron and any sight score of 2,351. Meredith was 6 back for the runner-up, while Bassham posted 2,344 for 3rd. In the final sub-aggregate, Wigger continued to hold his position while Bassham surged ahead of Meredith for the next high spot which also gained for him the overall runner-up honors. The four-man Army Championship team led by Wigger was fielded by the U.S.Army Marksmanship Training Unit. Their members included Foster, Capt.Carl Jooss and Bassham.
