*Newspaper, Headline; U.S.proves tough in 300-meter matches. In the 300-meter Standard Rifle match, Army Reserve Sp5 David Kimes and Maj.Lones W.Wigger Jr. of the USAMU, Ft.Benning, slammed home identical world record scores of 575 to lead the competition while teammate Maj.John Foster gained the bronze medal at 569. The gold medal was awarded Kimes on the decision maker but the two men shared the world record. The 3 Army men were then joined by WO David Boyd in establishing a second world record and gaining for the U.S. another gold medal. Their combined efforts earned a record score of 2280. The final victory proved for the U.S.one of the most convincing and dominating feats of the world games and a "field day" for the shooters. The U.S. Rifle Team had won 9 of the 10 possible 300-meter gold awards, 2 in Standard Rifle and 7 of 8 in the 300M Free Rifle. In the individual matches, the U.S. shooters ruled supreme, taking all 5 gold in the long range matches. Bassham won the 300M Free Rifle aggregate, standing and prone gold medals (the only shooter to win 3 gold medals in one event) while Foster gained the gold in the kneeling match. And of course, Kimes, Wigger and Foster converged on the victory stand for all the laurels in the 300M Standard Rifle to make a clean sweep of gold in individual competition. *Ulmer Newspaper, July 11: Shooting Elite of the USA is training again in Ulm. For years now Ulm has been a fixed point when the National Team of the USA is on a Europe trip. A few days ago this Elite arrived again in Ulm before going to the World Championships in Switzerland. "Random Shots" On the eve of the final tryouts for the 41st World Shooting Championships, potential team members exuded confidence that the U.S. would field the strongest rifle team ever assembled in the world arena.....In Phoenix in June, the intense heat and wild desert winds could eliminate our strongest shooters from the team. The article goes on to talk about Lanny Bassham and Lones Wigger.....On the second day in the prone, Wigger shot a 399 by Capt. Edward Schumacher, who flew back from duty in Germany for the tryouts. Standing, Foster's 373 edged 372's by Lt.Boyd Goldsby and Wigger, while Bassham slipped to a 370.Bassham came back on with a 395 kneeling, to wind up the day with a scant 1160 lead over the 1159 and 1158 turned in by Foster and Wigger, respectively, in the "Any Sight" Aggregate which they fired with irons.
