Newspaper clippings. Patricia Kinsella. Southern Conference Executive Committee Denies Women to Compete in Men's Sports., 1964-1965
Scope and Contents
* "NARCISSUS'S LAST STAND." When girls can beat boys in sports they bar them from the tournaments. Not many years ago, women could neither vote, own property, nor serve on juries. They wouldn't do so yet had not vigorous and strong-minded women like Amelia Bloomer, Julia Ward Howe, and Susan B. Anthony agitate and marched in a manner which would have done credit to Martin Luther King. An example of the male ego at work is a recent ukase by Southern Conference officials that so far as they are concerned no women can participate in college varsity athletics-at least, not in sports in which they compete against men. No woman may compete in Southern Conference meets-so says the Richmond-based, five-state, nine-college organization. The Southern Conference is not being original in its ruling. Women aren't allowed to compete against men in National Collegiate Athletic Association events, either. It is believed that the recent Southern Conference ruling against women came about because of the presence at WVU of Bette Hushla, a 19-year-old sophomore who is the only female member of the University varsity swimming team. Bette competed in 13 Southern Conference meets this season. (Paragraph 21) Although there are many other women athletes at WVU, the ONLY OTHER FEMALE VARSITY ATHLETE AFFECTED BY THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE RULING IS PATRICIA (Trish) KINSELLA. Patricia, a 19-year-old pre-medical student, is on the freshman rifle team and next year would have shot on the varsity, a team which experts predict may be crowned the top such group in the nation. The four-man freshman team this year out-shot the WVU varsity at a recent NRA Inter-collegiate tournament, and Trish Kinsella was one of those four men. Kinsella's reaction to the Southern Conference ruling, which makes her ineligible for varsity meets, was a decision to transfer to the University of Maryland. * "SC OFFICIALS FIRM; 'U' COED WON'T SWIM." * "LITTLE GIRL SHOWS REALLY BIG AS WVU SWIM COMPETITOR."
