* Headline: Army honors top shooters. Three women shooters were among 12 Army marksmen honored Dec.11 when Brig.Gen. Volney Warner, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, FORSCOM, Ft.McPherson, in Atlanta, recognized the group for their outstanding shooting achievements during the recently concluded 41st World Shooting Championships at Thun, Switzerland. The 12 medalists, all members of the U.S.Army Marksmanship Unit at the west Georgia Infantry post, were a part of the 48 member U.S.Shooting Team to the world championship event ..... Although the Russian marksmen edged the U.S. shooters by a narrow margin of one in the victory parade for overall medal count, the rifle competition was completely dominated by the Americans. The chief contributor in this superb performance was Capt.Lanny R.Bassham.....who brought 15 medals home, 8 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze, along with Maj.Lones Wigger with 2 less total and Maj.John R.Foster. The 3 talented Army shooters garnered 37 medals among them, almost half the U.S. count. ...etc... Bassham was the only shooter in the world matches to win 3 gold medals in one match. He did this feat in the 300 meter Free Rifle when he won the prone and standing phases of the three position match and then topped the large contingent of aspiring shooters to gain the gold medal for the highest aggregate score. Foster won the gold medal in the kneeling phase to give the United States a clean sweep of the gold awards in the 300 meter match. etc. U.S. shooters set four world records at Thun in their quest for gold awards and tied three. * "Russia 1st in rifle matches".....The United States, which had dominated rifle shooting since the 38th World events in Cairo in 1962, scored 2,278 for the silver medal, while Norway was third.
