Camp Perry, OH. Tricia, a veteran shooter who was a medalist in the last Olympics and a newcomer to the national championship ranks shared top honors during the Smallbore phase of the Natl. Rifle and Pistol Championships held Aug.8-14.
The veteran, Army Reserve 1st Lt.John Writer, captured the Natl Smallbore Rifle Position Championship w/a score of 3175 out of 3200.
(para. 6) In the position competition, it was a nip-and-tuck battle all the way, w/3 shooters vying for the national title. Writer, who wound up with the crown, edged out second place finisher Maj. John Foster of the Marksmanship Training Unit at Ft.Benning GA, by 2 points and the 3rd place winner, WO David Boyd, by 3 points.
The race for the Position Championships turned into a family affair when Foster's wife, Tricia, ended up as the Women's Champion. She posted a winning score of 3165-195x to gain her first national title in this event. Mrs.Foster's victory broke a 5-year winning streak for Army Capt. Margaret T. Murdock of Ft. Benning.
