Scope and Contents

First part of the article was not with this continuation pg.8. More about USA wins.... When Capt. Murdock walded off the firing line later in the day her scoreboard showed an 1140-including the contested shot. What it would have been w/o all the interruptions is anyone's guess, but certainly she would have easily taken the gold medal for she was only 6 points down when the melee of confusion started and she was 24 down on the scoreboard when it ended. When the U.S. team walked off the firing line it was ahead of the USSR 20 points-w/o the contested 10 points-on the basis of scoring in the pits. But when the scores were posted, the U.S. was ahead only 2 points. Russia's shooter, Valentin Kornev, broke a tie w/ Maj. Foster on the basis of a higher score kneeling, to emerge as the gold medal winner. Both fired 1139 but Kornev got a 383x400 kneeling to Foster's 381. Foster won the silver medal. The U.S. team, despite all their setbacks on the 300-meter range, pocketed 3 gold medals to boost their total to 12-the same number won by the USSR-while Switzerland took 3 and Hungary 1 to hold the Russian team to only 2 gold and 4 silver medals. But before the day was over, the USSR added 2 more gold medals on the skeet range and the day ended w/USSR-16; USA 12; USSR 18 silver; USA 10 silver; USSR 5 bronze; USA 11 Bronze. Total, USSR 39; USA 31. Maj. Foster placed second in standing position w/ 372 and Lt. Writer 3rd w/ 367.
