Scope and Contents

Article date, Oct.17. Headline; Shooters Aim At Playing It Cool. Photo copy of John and Tricia (P.419.2638) The article talks a lot about food vendors, foreigner diets. Personnel, the range, weather etc. The only married couple on the U.S. team, Maj. John and Tricia Foster. This is the 7th match for the officer and 2nd for his wife. Prior to marriage she competed 4 years ago at Wiesbaden Germany. Both train at home at the Army Marksmanship Unit. On diet, the officer says the U.S. team is moderation, but not coffee, basically on a schedule of tea or cola drinks and probably little alcohol, "no one is a hard drinker and most are teetotalers." A hangover on the range doesn't work. "No smoking either, mostly because young men interested in becoming shooters never start the habit." Shooting, emphasizes Foster, "is opposite to other sports where increased adrenalin is desirable." Shooting requires cool-as-ice nerves, not a quickened pulse rate. Does the U.S. team have a doctor to check hearts and the effects of diet on well being? "No" and the major wishes someone would do a scientific study on the relationship. Did he ever try a depressant on his nerves? "Yes and it was wild." He says he didn't care how will he did, in fact, it brought a complete devil-may-care attitude. His wife, he notes, did not postpone shooting while pregnant, to the contrary, she never shot better. The rest of the article talks about the Russians.
