Scope and Contents
Much the same information as in folder #650 from Mar.5,1978. Jack Foster of Bozeman has been to New Zealand to instruct future Olympic competitors on the fine art of target shooting. He's an expert marksman...etc. He was named World Champion in shooting at targets 300 meters away in 1966 in West Germany and 1974 in Switzerland. He shot in the 1960 Olympics in Rome and 1968 in Mexico City......etc...etc. Foster continued to compete during his 20 year career in the Army. He occasionally complained about the strictness of some of the dress codes enforced in international competition. "I was able to change those rules because I was named an official in the rifle division of the International Shooting Union." "In the old days, the officials thought of shooters as gentlemen in grey suit jackets. Shooters need more flexibility than that." His Bozeman house may be the only one in the city with a 50 ft.target range in the basement. He also has a large workroom in his basement where he repairs target rifles, drawing customers throughout the U.S. He makes his own gun stocks, sometimes using traditional wood, other times fiberglass. Foster also makes his own ammunition, repeating operations such as resizing the neck of the cases and measuring out the powder about 2,000 times to produce large brass cartridges. "I can make about 120 bullets an hour." he said. In warmer weather, he practices silhouette shooting at rifle ranges in Logan and Livingston. He can also be found target shooting at the MSU rifle range. He's been shooting more than 20 years but he hasn't lost his drive to compete. "I thought about entering competition for the 1982 world championships, but I broke my shoulder skiing last year and couldn't practice. I like to win but don't have to. I'll still be shooting when I'm 80. Maybe I'll outlive all the other competitors" he said.
