Capt.Margaret Thompson Scored 599 in the smallbore rifle prone position. Her performance tied the match record set by Capt.Bruce Meredith and brought her from fourth place into the lead with a score of 1194 out of possible 1200. Trailing her by 2 points were Maj.John Foster and Maj.Tommy Pool. * Newspaper clipping: "Arizona Marksman Leads Texas Shoot". San Antonio. Maj.John Foster scored 369 in Standing position, Free Rifle to grab the 1st round lead. Foster totaled 1133, 6 points ahead of Tommy Pool. Margaret Thompson just missed in her try to become the 1st woman to make the Olympic shooting squad. "Navy's Hamilton Wins, Gains Olympic Berth" (Hamilton is a pistol shooter). In the smallbore rifle prone match, Margaret Thompson became the first woman to ever win this national crown as she edged out Capt.Lones Wigger 1788 to 1786. John Foster and Tommy Pool matched scores for the third straight day and wound up deadlocked for third place with 1785 point totals.
