Scope and Contents
* "Hellgate Scores" ROTC in a weekly shoot. Four-postion. Foster of the ROTC squad fired 390 high. * "Hellgate Scores" Smallbore shoot, 4-position. Foster was high score with 393. * "ROTC Riflemen Top Frenchtown" Western Montana Smallbore Assn. rifle match. "ROTC" scored 1,878 to Frenchtown's 1,874. Foster was high scorer w/ 386 points. * "MSU Rifle Team Wins First Match, Bids for Second Successful Year". The University rifle team began its bid for another successful season by winning the frist match in the Western Montana Smallbore League. MSU edged Frenchtown 1878 to 1874. MSU riflemen recently captured "Betsy Rotcy" - and ancient firearm resembling a musket, offered by the Butte School of Mines as a traveling trophy in 1951 for collegiate rifle competition in Montana- by defeating Montana State College. Since its inception in 1951, MSU has won the musket every year but the first. They have a fair claim to the Skyline Rifle championship even though it is an unofficial one. The squad defeated every other conference rifle team in postal matches last year. Jack Foster is a returning sharpshooter. ROTC furnishtes most of the rifles, ammunition, ranges, jackets, gloves and scopes. The matches are based on a possible 400 points, divided evenly among four shooting positions. In order to quality for the varsity squad, a firer must average around 380 each week. * "Frenchtown Wins From Hellgate" Frenchtown 1,896 to Hellgate's 1,884. John Foster was high team scorer w/ 387. * "Rifle Team Places First at Seattle" Northwest Regional Intercollegiate Rifle Match, held at Seattle May 17. The 6 man team (5 Army and 1 Air Force cadets) won w/a score of 1430. In the individual, John Foster took first place with a score of 288.
