Slightly different pose. * "Springfield Man Third In Match" and "Parents Accept Trophy". Pfc. John R. Foster of Springfield, OH, tied the former record in the National trophy individual rifle match but it was only good enough for third place. Foster fired a 244 out of 250 to tie the former record set in 1952. Marine S/Sgt. V.D.Mitchell carded a 246 to break the record and take first place. Gen.Randolph Pate, commandant of the U.S.Marine Coorps, presents the 25th Infanty Div. Trophy to Frank and Catherine Foster during recent ceremonies at Camp Perry. The award was won by their son, John, for being the highest infantryman firing at the 1956 National Matches. He was unable to accept the trophy because at the time of presentation he was firing in the finals of the Olympic free rifle competition. * "Springfielder Ranks 10th In Rifle Shoot". Camp Perry, Sept. 8. ....in the third and final round of free rifle competition in quest of places on the U.S.Olympic squad which will fire a Melbourne, Australia, this fall....Tenth-ranking and only Ohioan in the group was Army Pfc.John Foster with 1,560.
