* "MSC Student Takes top Honors Here In First Annual Gallery Tourney". Picture of 3 competitors, Foster on the right. John Foster, a student at MSU, Missoula. Foster had the highest aggregate score with 939 points out of a possible 1,000. He was last year's state gallery champion. Foster's score also placed him first in the master's class, with Lones Wigger, Montana State College, Bozeman, second with 933 points. * "Moose, Foster Lead final Sunday Shoot" Western Smallbore Assn. High individual aggregate was shot by John Foster, ROTC,with 388-23X. Foster's score won the Mau-Jones trophy. * "MSU Rifleman On Second All-American" - The Montana Kaimin, Tues. May 28,1957, "Honor Cadets Named Monday During Review" - "MSU Rifle Team Captain Is Selected To Second Place All-American Team": John Foster, captain of the MSU varsity and Army ROTC rifle teams, has been named a member of the Second Place 1957 All-American Rifle Team. Foster recently returned from the Sixth Army Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Roberts, CA. He placed second in aggregate scores among 390 members competing in the matches. Foster is considered one of the top firers in the nation with both .22 and .30 caliber rifles. Other accomplishments: High individual firer in the Sixth Army Area W.R.Hearst Match in 1955; possibly first or second in the same event this year; NRA Champion in the Pacific Northwest Region in 1955; Pershing Rifle National Champion in 1955; and high man in the Western Montana Smallbore League this year. He was also winner of the Montana Smallbore State Match, and winner of the Great Falls 100-shot offhand match. Foster has won enough medals and trophies to fill a good sized room. His experience will be of utmost value when he enters the Army next year as a commissioned officer. * Photo and caption; Cadet John R. Shaggy similarities makes identification tough. Foster is 3rd from the right (#4 contestant) in the plaid shirt and cowboy hat. * "Ten Army ROTC Cadets Honored For Military Skill" 10 cadets at MSU named Distinguished Military Students. The designation is reserved for outstanding qualities of leadership, high moral character, and definite aptitude for the military service. Each of the cadets will receive a letter of congratulation from the Commanding General, Sixth Army. Distinguished Military Students have the option of applying for a Regular Army commission as part of the Distinguished Military Graduate program. From these application lists, 550 second lieutenants are commissioned yearly in the Regular Army. They receive the same commissions as do graduates of West Point. * Letter: To; Frank and Katherine Foster. From; Dept. of Military Science and Tactics, MSU, Missoula, MT. Congratulating them on their son's having been selected as a Distinguished Military Student.
