* State Championship Winners. 1956 Montana - John Foster, Gallery Rifle; score, 1557 (4-Position?) 1957 Montana - John Foster, Gallery Rifle; score, 1564 1958 Idaho - John Foster, Gallery Rifle; score, 1168 (3-Position?) * "Foster Fires 1168 Rifle Aggregate For Idaho Award". The Idaho State Gallery Rifle Open and Resident Team Championships. Hellgate Rifle Club won the Sharpshooter award with 1510. The Idaho Gallery Championship went to John Foster, a student at the School of Forestry, University of Montana, who fired an aggregate of 1168. Foster had to post a 97-93 in the last individual match (any sight standing) to beat Paul Middleton by 1 point in the aggregate. * "Foster Wins Offhand Meet", "MSU Student Wins Rifle Shoot Here". 2nd annual Schuetzen Rifle Tournament in Great Falls, MT. John Foster fired 950 out of a possible 1000 in 100 offhand rounds. * "Bozeman Gunner Wins Rifle Meet", "Wigger Has 951 For Schuetzen Win". Annual Schuetzen Rifle Tournament in Big Timber, MT. Lones Wigger won with a score of 951. John Foster was 2nd with 940. * "Western Division Rifle Champion". Montana State Gallery Rifle Western championships. John Foster was aggregate winner scoring 1558, shooting on the Hellgate range in Missoula. The winning team in both Iron Sights and Any Sights was from Hellgate Club. The team was composed of Foster, Doug Jones, Frank Tetrault and Bob Franklin. * The new ISU smallbore rifle target which became official on Jan.1,1958. And an interesting comparison of scores fired on the new target at the International 50-meter match at Kiev, Russia.
