* Photos: P.419.2733, Brig.General Francis Schweinler, Fort Lewis, Washington presents 1st Lt.John Foster with "Top Shooter Award"for winning the commander's individual rifle championship at the 6th US Army Rifle Matches. He received a match-grade M-1 rifle. Apr.7,1962. P.419.2734, Brig.General Schweinler, presents Trophy to 1st Lt.John Foster for winning Int'l Free Rifle Match in the 6th US Army Rifle Matches held at Ft. Lewis, WA. Apr.7,1962. * "Foster Dominates Army Rifle Matches" Foster won the commander's individual rifle championship with a score of 976 out of a possible 1000 and was awarded a match-grade M-1 rifle. This is the top award of the Sixth Army Matches. Open to qualified Army personnel from the 8-state Sixth Army area and to certain civilian and non-Army service personnel from the Pacific Northwest, this year's matches attracted 443 competitors. Foster was on the winning team in the 600-yard team match; placed 2nd in the open class in the offhand championship with a score of 194 out of a possible 200 points; won the rapid fire championship with a score of 399 out of 400. He also won the 600-yard slow fire match, 197 out of 200; the 300-meter free rifle match, 1005(?) out of 1200; the 50-meter.22 caliber 3-position match, 1100 out of 1200; and placed 3rd in the open class combined slow fire match and the 200-yd slow fire match;... etc. * "New Ant Flat Forester Rates Among World Champion Shooters" - "Foster, State, National Rifle Champ, Firing As Civilian Now" Foster, new forester at the Ant Flat Ranger Station who was recently discharged from the Army, is truly among the world's champions in shooting. Last June, Foster was one of a 17-man U.S.team to travel to Oslo, Norway, to take part in a series of World Shooting Championships for Rnning Deer, Skeet, and Clay Pigeon. These matches were sanctioned by the Int'l Shooting Union. Foster won first place in the Running Deer, double-shot, with a 222 score, took 6th in the Running Deer single-shot,w/219, which gave him first place in the Running Deer aggregate with 441 score.....etc. the rest is background information with other match and championship wins. Jack Foster, Springfield's only entrant in the 1960 Olympic games is still active in rifle competition, but he is firing as a civilian now after completing a three-year tour of duty in the U.S.Army. Foster returned to Springfield after being discharged from the Army at Ft.Benning, will be gunning for a national title when competition oopens at Camp Perry in late July.
