Scope and Contents

(“Stinknik” is the Dewar Course award). The Stinknik motto is; We improve with a good score, a laugh and a helping hand. A profile of Jack Foster’s life in shooting and military. Opening statement: Tonight’s honored member has long been a living expression of our motto. This person has fired many good scores in years of successful competition. Our subject is also known for friendliness and ready humor. Likewise, many of us have benefitted from his helping hand. To one who truly embodies the Stinknik spirit, we say – This is your life---John R. Foster. Born Sept. 13, 1936 in Muskegon, MI. Parents; Frank Fisher (worked for the railroad) and Katherine Edyvean Foster. The family moved to Marion and then to Springfield, OH. Very funny stories of Jack’s childhood and high school years are written. At a young age, Jack begged for a bow and arrow. Dad finally brought one home – he told Jack never to point it at anyone. Jack promptly shot into the grocery sack his Dad was carrying. That incident put him on “hold” until he was 15, when he started into smallbore shooting. 1952 he began shooting and made fast progress. In 1953 he received his first rifle, and in 1954, fired with the college team in Missoula, MT, where he majored in forestry. In 1956 he set 6 outdoor records, placed 13th at 300 meter in the Olympic trials, and, also placed 3rd in the Nat’l Trophy Individual at Perry among 2700 competitors, and received High Infantryman award. At Fort Benning, in 1965 he met Trish, who came to train for the 1966 World Championships. Apparently, at Jack’s suggestion, Margaret Thompson invited Trish to stay in her apartment at Ft. Benning. Jack became Trish’s self-appointed host at Benning...etc. Things progressed rapidly, and by the time tryouts in San Antonio in June ended, they decided to get married in Sept., after Wiesbaden World Championships. Both shot very well that year. Sept. 20, 1966 after Jack’s 30th birthday they were married at Ft. Benning. They spent a few weeks hunting in MT and a couple months on the road with the AMTU team. 1970, Anne was born, and 1972 Jean was born. After Jack retired, June 1, 19880, they moved to Bozeman and Jack was hired as coach of the rifle team for MSU. And he began a new business, Accuracy International. In winter time, Jack got into skiing, but that didn’t fare too well, breaking a leg the 1st year, and shoulder the 3rd year, and the getting the run named after him – “Foster’s Folly”, when he fell 1,000 vertical feet, breaking 7 ribs, puncturing a lung and cracking a vertebra. The rest of “This is your life”, on a serious note, lists some of his MANY shooting accomplishments.
