Newspaper clipping. Jean Foster. The Daily Athenaeum (WVU paper). , 1992 or'93?
Scope and Contents
“Leader by example...Foster’s tenacity paying huge dividends” Standing at 5’, Foster may not resemble the stereotypical portrait of a gunslinger. But as a true marksman will attest, brutish appearance doesn’t win rifle matches, skill does, and Foster is loaded with it. Foster is a thoroughbred at hitting targets. Her mother and father, both former world class shooters, coaxed young Jean into inheriting their craft nine years ago. At first, Foster was hesitant to pick up the family tradition. Her apathy steadily dissipated after she registered her first whipping over dear old dad. “I really didn’t like it when I first started” Foster said. “I kind of did it just to make dad happy. But then I beat him and that kept me going.” Daily training is integral to the West Virginia program. Foster realizes the importance of keeping physically and mentally prepared. Foster wasted little time after breaking onto the NCAA scene in 1992. She placed 12th in the air rifle and 14th in the smallbore at the NCAA championships that year. Foster also pocketed her 1st All-American honor and represented the U.S. at the prestigious Strasbourg Master’s Match in France. Athenaeum Sports – Jean in standing position aiming rifle, pictured.
