Scope and Contents

Sport Spotlight – Shooting. Shooting was a shoo-in at the Athens Games of 1896. Baron de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, was a marksman. There were 5 events at Athens; this summer in Atlanta, there will be 15, five for women. Number of competitors: 430 (300 men, 130 women). Competition Format: All athletes fire a qualification or preliminary round. The top 8 (rifle and pistol events) shoot a final round. In rifle and pistol finals, competitors fire 10 additional shots, with results and rankings given after each shot. Typical Competition Weapons: Anschutz Super Match model 1813. Ammunition: Standard .22-caliber rimfire. Targets: 1mm (the head of a pin). Scoring: Bull’s-eye targets are used for rifle and pistol events. Targets are divided into 10 concentric rings. The inner ring (sometimes called the 10 ring) scores 10 points when any part of the bullet strikes any part of that zone. For final rounds, each zone is divided into tenths so that a perfect center 10 scores a maximum of 10.9 points. 50m free/stand three-position: women shoot 20 rounds per position in 2:30. Finals are 10 shots in standing position. Rifle: Women, .22 caliber standard rifle not to exceed 12.12 pounds. Target: Bull’s-eye with 10.4 mm 10 ring (size of a dime). Perfect score: 600 for women; world-class score 580.
