Addendum 21. Letter to D.S. Myer, Director, War Relocation Authority, Washington D.C. , August 4,1945
Scope and Contents
cc-Mr. Kerr, Pres. Powell Chapter American War Dads and Guy Robertson, Director of Heart Mtn. Relocation Center, from Governor Leslie Hunt. To Mr. Myer from the Governor: “I am in receipt of the attached letter from citizens living in the vicinity of the Heart Mtn. Relocation Center. I am also familiar in detail with the limited assistance being given these evacuees in returning to their previous homes. I should like to suggest with all the emphasis at my command that the assistance being given the evacuees to return to their precious homes and economic situations is entirely inadequate and, I Think, a breach of faith on the part of our Government. I realize that, for security reasons, these people were snatched from their homes at tremendous financial sacrifices and place in the Centers. They had, of course, committed no crimes and were entirely at the mercy of our Government, which thought such action necessary. Of this action on the part of the Government I have no criticism. However, the Government does now have a moral obligation to return these people to their homes and to assist them until they have fully regained their economic status prior to the war. In other words, when these evacuees suffered loss of home, financial income, and security they had built up for themselves through the years, the Government is certainly breaking faith in not returning these people to their previous status. It is my recommendation, and I am advised the former Governor had such commitments when the Japs were brought to Heart Mountain, that every Japanese family located at Heart Mtn. by the Relocation Authority be returned to their previous homes. We do not want a single one of these evacuees to remain in Wyoming, and it is your responsibility to see that these evacuees are assisted to the extent that none will remain within the state.”
