Scope and Contents
The Heart Mtn. detention camp consisted of four hundred and fifty oblong barracks, 120’ X 20’ and were laid out in twenty blocks divided by unpaved streets. Each building contained six single-room apartments ranging in size from 16’ X 20’ to 24’ X 20’. Heavy black tar paper covered the exterior walls. (Barracks consisted of 6 units each, divided into small, medium and large sized units. Families were assigned to the units by family size.) The detainees arrived to, incomplete barracks’, no windows, no interior wall covering, tar-papered exterior and a pot-bellied stove later used for heating the rooms during the winter months. The only other contents provided was an army cot, a mattress, and a blanket for each person. There was a single drop light in each apartment, and no running water.
