Scope and Contents

In Feb. 1943, a library was opened with 1,400 books which expanded to include 10,000 volumes. The Heart Mountain Sentinel’s October 24, 1942 issue printed it’s usual, “What’s Going on at Heart Mountain.” It listed the following CLASSES: Harmonica, Drama, Goh Clubs, Handicraft, Social Dancing, Shogi, Flower Arrangement, Girls Glee Club, Fashion Illustration, Costume Designing, String Ensemble, Bridge, Knitting, Embroidery, Sewing, Chikuzen Biwa, Utai, Shodo, Shigin, Social Science (Japanese), Bookkeeping, Shorthand, English, and Cooperative. Most of these groups met several nights during the week. The RECREATION DEPT. SPONSORED: Boy Scouting, Girl Scouting, and Campfire Girls. An Art League was started and soon had 250 members. There was a branch of the American Association of University Women, Parent Teacher Association, and a Red Cross Chapter. There was a dance orchestra, a drum and bugle corps, and a string ensemble. ORGANIZED SPORTS: Softball, Volleyball, Judo, Football, Baseball, Sumo Wrestling, Hoop, Weightlifting, Ping-pong, Badminton, Boxing, and Fencing. There were several girl teams as well as boy’s teams. A water hole at camp was used as a swimming pool and then became an ice-skating rink come winter. Volunteers also laid out a nine-hole golf course in 1943. “A most talented and remarkable master of KABUKI DRAMA was in Heart Mountain, by the name of Nakamura Sensei. I was fortunate to have participated in the dramas, under the tutelage of Mr. Nakamura, which dramas were presented in the mess halls.” Miyeko Mickey Kubota.
