The Honolulu Advertiser. “Go For Broke”. A salute to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team on its 50th anniversary. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion and their members received the following in World War II: UNIT DECORATIONS *7 Presidential Distinguished Unit Citations (equivalent to a Distinguished Service Cross for the unit). *36 Army commendations. *87 Division commendations. *18 decorations from Allied nations. INDIVIDUAL DECORATIONS *9,486 Purple Hearts (for wounds or death in action). *1 Medal of Honor (for gallantry in action). *52 Distinguished Service Crosses (for exceptional heroism). *1 Distinguished Service Medal (exceptional meritorious service). *560 Silver Stars, with 28 oak leaf clusters in lieu of second award (gallantry in action). *22 Legion of Merit Medals (exceptionally meritorious service). *15 Soldier’s Medals (non-combat heroism). *4,000 Bronze Stars with 1,200 Oak Leaf Clusters (heroic or meritorious achievement). Go For Broke: The 442nd Regimental Combat Team sailed from Honolulu for training at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. They then went on to North Africa, Italy and France.
