Gov. Lester Hunt. Letters Re: Newspaper Scandal. , Apr.- July, 1943
Scope and Contents
Gov. Hunt wrote (in part), “with reference to the food in storage at Cody and I beg to advise that I cannot get excited about any sensational story in the Denver Post, especially when I know that Carberry was sent to the Jap Relocation Center to write a political story and that his information primarily was given by a disgruntled employee who was discharged about 2 weeks ago and went direct to the Denver Post. .....It takes only a little analyzing of the contents of the story to understand the political bias back of it. The last figure I had on the population of Heart Mountain was 13,500, and Carberry sets out in his story that there are 86,400 cans of fruit on hand. It seems like an outrageous amount, but divided by the number of people at the Center it amounts to 6.4 cans per person, which would be, I presume, approximately a month’s supply, and you will agree with me, I am sure, that food stuffs cannot be brought into a city to feed 13,500 people in a wheel barrow and it would not be good business to bring it in every day.....Gov. continues with figures on beans, peas, crackers, canned vegetables etc.
