FRANK ABE, Writer - Producer. Grant proposal to the CLPEF - Conscience and the Constitution, June-July, 1997
Scope and Contents
1) Conscience and the Constitution, a one-hour documentary for public television, an interactive website and a CD-ROM. Each format compares two responses to the legal issues raised by the expulsion and incarceration of Japanese America: cooperation and resistance. “In 1944, 85 American citizens refused to be drafted out of the American concentration camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, until their rights were first restored, and their parents released from camp. It was the largest organized resistance to incarceration. It was prosecuted by the government and opposed by the only national leadership of Japanese America. The resisters served two to three years in prison. For the next fifty years they were written out of the official history of Japanese America. Only recently have we rediscovered the resisters and restored them to the community. Through the eyes of an ordinary Nisei we see into the heart of the Japanese American conscience and a public debate that is still alive today, as he tries to bring about a reconciliation between the Japanese American establishment and the surviving resisters. The difference between those who cooperated, and those who resisted, is an untold story of Japanese America.” 2) Project Description. 3) Additional Project Information.
