"Mini-city full of millionaires. A look at Cody, Wyoming" - "Grand Old Men of the oil industry", 1960-1974
Scope and Contents
The Billings Gazette - Apr.28, 1974 - "Mini-city full of millionaires. A look at Cody, Wyoming. - Cody is a wealthy city. And Cody is a city of the wealthy. The two are inextricably entwined and that relationship is evident everywhere in this city of 5,100 in northwestern Wyoming. Husky Oil comprises the industrial park across Shoshone River from Cody proper and its founder, Glenn Nielson, controls one of the Cody fortunes.
The late Paul Stock was another oil millionaire.
And the late W.R.Coe and his family in Cody have some of the oldest money in the community.
The list stretches on.
Asked about the effects the wealthy have had on Cody, the former newspaper editor says, "The material effect is quite significant." His List includes:
1) The high school swimming pool. 2) The band shell in the city park. 3) The old Buffalo Bill museum purchased and given to the city. 4) The largest initial contributuion for the hopital built in 1939. 5) Subsidy of the 1939 hospital. 6) The medical center building. 7) The Buffalo Bill Historical Center was built on an initial contributuion from Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney of New York. Cody families have been instrumental in aditions to and operation of the structure. 8) The Nielson family built an 18-hole public golf course. The list is only partial. (Note: Paul Stock was responsible for #1, 2, 3, and 5).
Final Disbursements: The Paul Stock Foundation allotted $78,000 for city organizatons and another $18,700 for scholarships in 1973.
