REMINISCENCES:1976 Olympic Games-Margaret Murdock was the 1st woman in the 80-year history to win a medal in open shooting competition, 1976
Scope and Contents
REMINISCENCES: The Backroads of Her Mind. In 1976, at the Montreal Olympic Games, Margaret Thompson-Murdock became the first woman in the eighty-year history of the modern Games to win a medal in open shooting competition. Her winning score of 1162 was posted on the official scoreboard, making her Olympic gold medalist in the three-position rifle event. Six hours after the competition ended and three hours after the scores had been poste, it was determined by officials that a clerical error had been made. A point was added to the score of Lanny Bassham of Ft. Worth, TX, throwing the match into a tie. According to International Shooting Union (UIT) rules, a tie is broken by the highest point total on the final ten shot series. Thus, Bassham became the 1976 Olympic Champion by virtue of his final ten shots from the kneeling position. Continued in Margaret’s words.
