Scope and Contents
Newspaper clipping and copy of a postcard. “Woman Sets Rifle Marks.” A new national record fell every time Lt. Margaret Thompson squeezed the rifle trigger during the South Pacific International Team Tryouts. She set new records at 300-meter and 50meter over the 120-shot course of fire, won the standing position smallbore match over the best the Army, Air Force and Marines offered, and placed fourth, or high service in the two-day aggregate. Her victory in the standing position was outstanding because she had to change to a lightweight rifle – the kind she will have to use in the World Championships in Wiesbaden, Germany, this summer against women of other nations. She also fired without a palm rest or hook butt-plate, which men were allowed to use. Her grand aggregate score was 2272. The combined aggregate was won by Capt. John foster, U.S. Army team from fort Benning with 2291. Capt. Lones Wigger, Army, took second with 2286, and Capt. Tommy Pool, Army was third with 2282.
