VII Pan American Games, Mexico City. Newspaper clippings: Army Times, “Wins Pan-Am Rifle Event – WAC Lt. Thompson Ties World Record” – Los Angeles Times, “Pan-Am Games Summaries”. Magazine clippings: Sports Illustrated, “Pan-American Games”, Margaret Murdock won the individual smallbore rifle, setting a world record in the standing position and finishing one point shy of the U.S. record with her 1166 total. Athletes’ Feats, “Riflery”, By shooting 385 out of a possible 400 points, Murdock set a new world’s record in the standing position. Combined with 395 prone and 386 kneeling scores, Murdock’s 1166 accumulation was the winning total. The 33-year-old anesthesiology student is the first person to win this event twice as she took the same title at the 1967 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg. Murdock is the only woman to hold a “open” world record in shooting. – Photocopy of the Gold Medal.
