Newspaper column by Bob Hentzen. “Murray superstar of writers”, I was talking to a big-timer – Jim Murray, the syndicated columnist for the Los Angeles times. He asked what I had in mind for the day, and I told him about Margaret Murdock, a member of the U.S. shooting team from Topeka. Doggone if Murray didn’t decide to accompany me. No way did a small fry from Topeka expect to have Jim as a companion. For me, writing about Murdoch was a must. But for him, it had to be very optional. It entailed making a trip out of Montreal to write about a low-profile sport with low-profile competitors. But probably Murray figured he couldn’t lose with the angle of a woman reaching the top in a predominately Male event. Anyway, I’ll always remember the day I steered Murray, now a Pulitzer prize winner, to a column.
