She bested the top male shooters in the Western Hemisphere to win the 1975 Pan Am Games’ gold medal in the three-position smallbore rifle category. By shooting 385 out of a possible 400 points, Murdock set a new world record in the standing position. Combined with 395 prone and 386 kneeling scores, Murdock’s 1166 accumulation was the winning total. The 33-year-old anesthesiology student is the first person to win this event twice, as she took the same title at the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.
