Biographical or Historical Information
Alexander Phimister Proctor was born in Bozanquit, Ontario, Canada in 1860. His family soon relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he was first introduced to the American West. Growing up on the frontier, Proctor spent much of his time hunting and drawing the wildlife of the Rocky Mountains. In 1885, Proctor moved to New York, and studied art with the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. Proctor had the opportunity to display his first major sculptures in 1893, at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This experience led to many commissions for large public monuments and earned him international recognition as a gifted sculptor and animalier. Throughout his career, Proctor produced a variety of sculptures honoring both famous individuals and the anonymous icons of the American West. He rejected the growing modern art movement, remaining loyal to his naturalist roots, and creating a style uniquely his. Proctor died in 1950 at his home in Los Altos, California.
