Abstract

Dr. Shoemaker papers, printed material and photographs.  Correspondence, reports and documents relating to Dr. Shoemaker's tenure as a physician with the Bureau of Indian Affairs from about 1905 to 1920.  Includes numerous photographs of clinics, patients, students, etc....  Also contains copies of publications about or by Native Americans during that period.

Biographical or Historical Information

Dr. Ferdinand Shoemaker, (1873-1945/ 1905-1920): doctor in the Indian Service who treated Crow patients in the early 20th century. 1909-1918, documented patients and prepared a series of educational slides on Indian health. Throssel, Richard: Between 1909-1911, photographer-at-large for the Indian Service, and focused on the Crow. In 1910, he joined Dr. Shoemaker preparing a series of educational slides on Indian health, which became part of a nationwide federal campaign to fight the spread of tuberculosis and trachoma. They promote healthy lifestyles and caution against sharing utensils and pipes.
