She was a firing member of the US Team that set new world records at the World Championships at Wiesbaden, West Germany, in July 1966. Lt. Thompson won her first medal in Topeka while a member of the Kiwanis rifle Team under the direction of J.B. Hart and the late Col. Knudson.
